The Anointing of the Sick is a sacrament of healing, offering God’s grace, strength, and, when it is His will, physical healing to those who are seriously ill or near death. Through the anointing with holy oil and the prayers of the priest, the recipient is given spiritual strength, peace, and courage to endure suffering in union with Christ (CCC 1520). “By the sacred anointing of the sick and the prayer of the priests, the whole Church commends those who are ill to the suffering and glorified Lord” (CCC 1499). This sacrament not only provides comfort and healing but also forgives sins when the recipient is unable to confess (CCC 1532). It prepares the soul for eternal life and strengthens trust in God’s plan.
