Holy Orders is the sacrament through which men are ordained as deacons, priests, or bishops to serve the Church. This sacrament, instituted by Christ at the Last Supper, confers a sacred character that enables ordained ministers to preach the Gospel, celebrate the sacraments, and shepherd the faithful (CCC 1536). “The ministerial priesthood is at the service of the common priesthood. It is directed at the unfolding of the baptismal grace of all Christians” (CCC 1547). Bishops receive the fullness of Holy Orders and are successors to the Apostles, priests act as co-workers with bishops in leading the faithful, and deacons serve in ministries of charity, the Word, and liturgy. This sacrament ensures the continuation of Christ’s mission in the Church.
